IPAA: Accreditation
Membership of College of Psychoanalysts in Ireland
The College of Psychoanalysts in Ireland is comprised of psychoanalytic practitioners who choose to work together to further psychoanalysis, particularly in Ireland, notwithstanding their membership of other psychoanalytic organisations. Furthermore, that idea of ‘choosing to work with’ extends to the theories and practice of past generations of psychoanalysts. So the college affirms the place of the long tradition of psychoanalysts and theorists, beginning with Sigmund Freud, and confirms that it chooses to work with their legacy.
Ordinary membership of the College is open to anyone sharing the ethos and aims outlined in our Mission Statement. Ordinary members may not use their membership of the College in any way which might infer an accreditation to practice.
Practitioner Membership, which allows for inclusion in the on-line list of practitioners, is open to practitioners accredited either by a member organisation of ICP or by APPI.
We also offer direct access to Practitioner Membership to those applicants who fulfil the following conditions:
- successful completion of a psychoanalytically based psychotherapy training at Master’s level
- engagement in a personal psychoanalysis for a period of at least three years
- engagement in supervised clinical practice for a similar period as part of a training in clinical psychoanalysis
- ongoing engagment in psychoanalytic clininal practice
- presentation of clinical work to a panel of the College of Psychoanalysts
- Demonstration of an ongoing commitment to psychoanalysis by virtue of engagement in a reading group, the attendance at clinical or academic workshops or conferences, and/or personal research and reading.
Application for inclusion on the list of Registered Practitioner Members of the College of Psychoanalysts in Ireland on the basis of holding an equivalent status in a member organisation of the Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP) or the Association for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy in Ireland (APPI) will be accepted until September 2006, after which date all applicants must comply with the requirements set out above.
