FTAI: Accreditation

Applicants must meet the following two criteria:

1. Entry Requirements to Specialist Training in Family Therapy and Systemic Practice.

Applicants for specialist family therapy training should have successfully undertaken and completed the equivalent of a 3-year full-time (minimum length: 1,800 hours) general training in the human sciences at degree level.

2. “Specialist Training” in Family Therapy and Systemic Practice.

Applicants for Registration must have successfully undertaken and completed a specialist training in Family Therapy and Systemic Practice spanning not less that four years and incorporating not less than 1400 training hours accredited by F.T.A.I or equivalent body. Specialist training is understood as any course, module or programme, which is specifically designed as a contribution to the fulfilment of the 3 criteria for registration as a Family Therapist with F.T.A.I or equivalent body.

Specialist Training Criteria:

A minimum of 250 hours of “personal psychotherapeutic experience” in an individual or group setting. Personal psychotherapeutic experience is understood as developing an understanding of self in relation to life
context including professional practice.

A minimum of 500hours of “theory or methodology” relevant to family therapy and systemic practice. The 500 hours can be made up in different components, which must be coordinated and evaluated by a systemic family therapist. The student must be able to demonstrate that they have successfully completed each component.
