APPI: Accreditation
Graduates of the Masters programme at the School of Psychotherapy, St Vincent’s University Hospital and graduates of the Masters degree in Psychoanalysis at LSB College/DBS are eligible for full membership on application. In conformity with the Primary Object, in certain circumstances full membership may also be offered to applicants who have appropriate qualifications and experience. All applicants for full membership need to apply in writing to the Executive Committee and have their application supported by two members of APPI.
Register of Practitioner Members
APPI also maintains a Register of Practitioner Members and a Conditional Register for members who are engaged in fulfilling the accreditation criteria. The accreditation criteria are as follows:
- Personal analysis for a minimum of twice weekly sessions (approx 80 sessions per year) for three years.
- Psychoanalytic supervision of a member’s clinical work on a weekly basis (approx 40 sessions per year) for three years, followed by a supervisor’s report.
- Presentation to a clinical forum of either a case study or a theoretical paper which is informed by a member’s clinical work.
- Applicants to both Registers must agree in writing to abide by the Code of Ethics and Practice of the Association.
Although the Registers cater for a sub-section of practitioner members, it is worth emphasising that overall there is only one category of membership and that currently a proportion of members who practise clinically choose to remain unregistered.
